A WhatsApp Click-to-Chat link (wa.me link) is a URL that, when clicked, directly opens a WhatsApp conversation with a specific phone number — without the user needing to save the number in their contacts first. This is possible because WhatsApp supports a universal link scheme that any browser can interpret as a WhatsApp deep link.

These links are official and fully supported by WhatsApp. They work on both WhatsApp app (mobile) and WhatsApp Web (desktop), and do not require any special API access or WhatsApp Business account — though having a WhatsApp Business account gives you additional features like business profiles, quick replies, and automation.

For Indian WhatsApp numbers, the correct format is:

  • Country code: 91 (no + symbol)
  • Followed directly by your 10-digit mobile number
  • No spaces, dashes, or brackets
  • Example: +91 98765 43210 becomes 919876543210 in the URL
